Aarhus - Sat 4 Jul
A relaxed, walkable day in Aarhus - Denmark's second city with a charming old quarter, a lovely harbour, and a proper university-town feel. Compact enough to explore on foot, ship docks right in the city.
🚢 Ship arrives: 8:00 AM | 🎯 Target onboard: 3:30pm | 🚢 Ship departs: 5:00 PM
📍 Port: Aarhus, Denmark | 🚶 Walk to centre: ~15 - 20 minutes
Aarhus at a Glance
Aarhus is the biggest city in the Jutland peninsula - a proper university city with a young, lively feel. The old town (Den Gamle By) is one of Denmark's most famous attractions, and the harbour area is a pleasant walk from where the ship docks. Wendy's tip: "I've never been - I don't know it well." So we're going in fairly blind but with a plan to keep it simple and relaxed.
Getting There
- 🚶 Walk: The cruise port is close to the city centre - about 15 - 20 minutes on foot. Straightforward and flat.
- 🚕 Taxi: Available if you prefer - short ride anyway.
- 🚲 City bikes: Aarhus is bike-friendly if you see bikes for hire.

Key stops from the Aarhus plan, keeping the old town, city centre, harbour, and art museum in one view.
Stress-Free Itinerary
☕ Morning - The Old Town (Den Gamle By)
| 8:00 - 8:45am | Disembark and head to Den Gamle By - the open-air "old town" museum. 75 historic buildings from across Denmark, moved and rebuilt here. A genuinely unique experience. |
| 8:45 - 10:00am | Explore Den Gamle By - allow time to wander the cobbled streets, pop into the old shops and houses. Open from 10am but arriving at 8:45 means you'll be there when it opens. |
🍽️ Late Morning
| 10:00 - 11:00am | Walk back towards the harbour through the city centre - pleasant streets, shops, cafes. |
| 11:00am - 12:00pm | Harbour walk - Aarhus has a lovely waterfront. Nice for a stroll, especially in the morning. |
🕌 Afternoon
| 12:00 - 1:00pm | Lunch in the city centre or harbour area. |
| 1:00 - 2:30pm | Explore the ARoS Aarhus Art Museum - home to the famous rainbow panorama "Your Colour View" on the roof. Well worth a visit even if you're not normally into art. |
| 2:30 - 3:00pm | Head back towards the ship - it's a short walk from the city centre. |
🚶 Return
- ~3:30pm - Back at the ship ✅ - plenty of time before 5pm departure
Key Highlights
Den Gamle By (The Old Town)
Denmark's most famous open-air museum - 75 historic buildings from different periods of Danish history, gathered and rebuilt. It feels like stepping into different centuries as you walk between them. Allow at least 90 minutes.
Aarhus Harbour
The waterfront area is a lovely walk - working harbour on one side, city on the other. Good for photos and a sense of the city's maritime character.
ARoS Aarhus Art Museum
Aros.dk - one of the largest art museums in Scandinavia. The roof-mounted rainbow panorama "Your Colour View" by Olafur Eliasson is the standout - you walk through a circular rainbow tunnel with views over the city. Worth the trip alone.
Aarhus Cathedral (Aarhus Domkirke)
The tallest church in Denmark - 96 metres. dating back to the 13th century. Worth knowing about if you're passing nearby, though Den Gamle By and ARoS are the stronger pulls.
Notes
- Ship arrives at 8:00 AM and departs at 5:00 PM - a full day but not an overwhelming one.
- Currency: Danish Krone (DKK). Denmark is not in the Eurozone. Card payments are widely accepted everywhere.
- Wendy hasn't been to Aarhus, so this is a fairly tentative first plan. The Old Town and ARoS are the definite highlights.
